I remember reading With A Single Spell (by Lawrence Watt-Evans) when it came out in the '80s and thought it was a fun read. When I saw that there was going to be an audiobook version of it, I jumped at the chance to audition.
In a brief nutshell, this is the story of Tobas who's kind of a slacker and is in training to become a wizard. His dad was a pirate, but he really didn't want to go into the family business, especially since his father's ship was destroyed by a sea monster... hence his wanting to become a wizard since there was a bit more job security there. During his apprenticeship his master ups and dies on him. Death happens, ya know, but the annoying thing is that he'd only taught Tobas a single spell so far. A wizard with only a single spell in his repertoire is not in high demand for his services. The book chronicles Tobas' journey to try and better his life, find a girlfriend, and learn more magick so that he earn a living... because, frankly, he doesn't really have any other skills. This is a light-hearted fantasy story and, yes, there is a dragon to be killed!
